The motard black Arai XD3 helmet is one of the solid color choices for the updated 2008 version of its popular XD dirt-street hybrid full-face motorcycle helmet. XD is short for "Crossover Design" and reflects the versatility of this Arai motorcycle helmet.
Arai XD3 helmet covers a number of uses; everything from adventure dirt/street touring to Super Moto. Such versatility comes from it having an extended MX-style peak and a face shield. Both the peak and shield of the motard black Arai XD3 helmet can be used or removed as desired.
Visually, the XD3 looks like a dirt bike helmet, with its long peak, narrow and protruding chin bar, and the big eyeport design that accepts the largest goggles. But, the XD3 adds a clear slip-up face shield that slides up under the mounted peak.
The versatility of this Arai hybrid full-face motorcycle helmet model comes from the ability to use the face shield alone without the peak to get a super-sleek full-face street motorcycle helmet that delivers wind-slicing aerodynamics.
Or, use it with the peak and no shield to get a traditional dirt biking helmet. The fiberglass-shelled DOT- and Snell-approved XD3 helmet can be quickly and easily configured for adventure touring, dual-sport, Super Moto competition, commuting, or whatever.
The most readily visible changes to the XD3 hybrid full-face motorcycle helmet model when compared to its predecessors is the venting and cooling system. Arai opted to borrow heavily from its more traditional dirt biking helmet model, the VX-Pro3.
Result is, the XD3 helmet utilizes two 10mm exhaust ports beneath each of two large and carefully-designed top rear diffusers covers that maximize low pressure Venturi vacuum for hot air extraction. A fingertip-adjustable slider mounted inside each diffuser allows easy airflow control.
Lower right- and left-side rear Venturi exhaust ducts draw even more hot air and moisture from inside the helmet. On the forehead, the XD3 uses Arai's recessed TDF-2 intake ducts that are wider and flatter for a larger intake hole than on earlier XD models. The new forehead intakes result in less drag and wind turbulence, improved airflow, and a cleaner look.
The new black motard Arai XD3 full-face motorcycle helmet also features an Emergency Release Cheekpad Design, another feature to come from the VX-Pro3 helmet. Developed to allow easier access to an injured rider, the cheekpads slide out easily by pulling on tabs built into the underside of each cheekpad, which are also interchangeable with optional pads of different thickness for a more custom fit.
XD3 helmet is designed with a pull-down chin bar spoiler that minimizes wind resistance and the contour of the lower shell has been refined. A neck-roll pad provides comfort and helps reduce wind noise, while Arai's Dry-Cool comfort liner leaves the rider's head...well, dry and cool.
